Macular Degeneration Therapies by John Ruhland, ND
While there are no effective pharmaceutical drugs for her condition, there is hope, in that there are several natural therapeutic options. While the problem would have been more easily treated earlier, when the drusen condition was found, I believe it is never too late to try to help oneself. The first thing I would recommend is an evaluation by an ophthalmologist, or other eye specialist, as there are different types of macular degeneration. A proper diagnosis is required before the best treatment plan can be developed. Some of the important natural therapies include the use of, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. These can slow down, or stop, the disease progression. There is also a possibility of reversing some of the damage. Specific suggestions: Anti-oxidants, which are very important, especially Vitamin COne successful therapy requires very high doses of Vitamin C, in the range that Linus Pauling recommended that everyone take. Pauling himself took very high doses, and lived a long, healthy life, despite considerable exposure to harmful chemicals. There have been numerous studies demonstrating the effectiveness of Vitamin C, and the other nutrients mentioned above, for macular degeneration. In addition to nutrients, there are other effective therapies, such as hyperbaric oxygen chamber, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Three studies — from the U.S., Yugoslavia, and Japan — show promising results in people using HBOT for macular degeneration. HBOT involves placing the patient in an oxygen-rich, pressurized environment. Multiple treatments are required. No single treatment works for everyone, and there is a remote chance that the wrong treatment could aggravate the condition. Please consult with a Naturopath or other holistic healthcare specialist.
